In the historic Ászár-Neszmély wine region 50 miles northwest from Budapest and halfway to Vienna, lies amid spectacular vistas covered by ancient and newly planted vineyards overlooking the river Danube, our winery, Hilltop Neszmély.
Since the Romans some 2000 years ago, this part of Hungary has always been an important grape growing and wine producing region. Starting in the 19th century, export destinations stretched from Japan to Mexico, with the main markets being England, Austria and Germany. The temperate climate with 2500 hours of sunshine annually, the warm loess soil, the configuration of the terrain all favour the quality of the grapes produced here. Proof of the long history of the Neszmély vineyards is the Dionysos group from the 2nd century AD. This unique and perfectly beautiful bronze statuette was found in 1888 a few kilometers from Neszmély.
Now the largest exporter of Hungarian bottled wine to Great Britain, Hilltop Neszmély Winery produces over fifty kinds of modern, innovative wines from our own grapes and grapes bought from other historic wine growing regions of Hungary.A full range of modern innovative wines adapted to the style and taste of the very demanding British wine drinkers has been produced in our newly equipped wineries. These champions have been made by our own team of winemakers totally controlling the whole process from grape to bottle. Our Sauvignon Blancs, the super-juicy Irsai Olivér and a comprehensive range of Chardonnays, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and various indigenous varietals all provide proof that top quality Hungarian grapes can be turned into individual wines of value.
Hilltop Neszmély has won the “Winery of the Year 2004” and the “Outstanding Winery of Hungary” title. Head winemaker Ákos Kamocsay has been chosen "Winemaker of the year" 1999 in Hungary and “Winemaker of the year” 1997 in London (Grapevine).
